About FriendWorX

Everyone deserves someone to call a friend.

FriendWorX is an Australian friendship and social connection service for young people aged 8–17. Small, facilitated online groups use shared gaming activities to create natural opportunities for interaction.

The game is not the outcome. FriendWorX uses Discovery before forming ongoing groups, and adult Guides support connection rather than provide therapy.

Why FriendWorX exists

Friendship cannot simply be assigned or prescribed

For some young people, meeting people and developing friendships can be difficult. Large or unstructured social settings may feel overwhelming. Geography, different interests, previous exclusion or needing more time to become comfortable can also reduce opportunities to find compatible peers.

These experiences are not true for every participant, and there is no single reason someone may want more peer connection. FriendWorX creates opportunities, a safer environment, shared experiences, familiarity, time and appropriate support. Young people build the relationships.

Our role

FriendWorX isn’t trying to teach friendship.

We create the conditions in which friendship has a chance to happen.

Why shared activities

Conversation is easier when conversation isn’t the activity.

Putting unfamiliar young people together and asking them to talk can create pressure. A shared activity gives them something to focus on, natural reasons to communicate, problems to solve together and moments to create, explore or laugh about.

The activity allows interaction to happen without making conversation itself the task. Shared experiences can then become familiar over time.

Why online

A meaningful place to meet

Young people already spend meaningful time in digital environments. Participating from home can reduce some initial pressure, geography becomes less restrictive and shared interests can bring together people who may never otherwise meet.

Online relationships do not automatically replace face-to-face friendship, and more screen time is not the purpose. FriendWorX deliberately structures the environment and its safeguards.

Why gaming

The delivery environment—not the product

Approved games and activities can support cooperation, communication, exploration, creativity, problem-solving and shared experiences. Winning and losing are not the focus.

FriendWorX is not esports, gaming tuition, gaming coaching or a gameplay-focused club. The intended outcome is social connection.

Small groups & consistency

Friendship needs more than an introduction. It needs time.

FriendWorX normally brings together up to four young people plus a Guide. A small group provides more room to participate, fewer competing voices, space for quieter participants and better visibility of group dynamics.

When compatible peer connections emerge, FriendWorX aims to move from Discovery into a consistent group. Repeated experiences can create:

  • familiarity
  • trust
  • inside jokes
  • shared memories
  • greater comfort
  • more natural conversation

Relationships can develop at their own pace. Friendship is never guaranteed.

Discovery, not assigned friendship

Young people should have a say in who they connect with

We don’t decide who a young person’s friends should be. We create safe opportunities for them to discover who they connect with.

Discovery allows young people to spend time with similarly aged peers before an ongoing group is formed. It helps FriendWorX notice where comfortable, natural connections begin rather than deciding from a form alone.

The Guide’s place

Present and responsible, without becoming the social centre

Guides help with introductions, inclusion, positive group dynamics, opportunities to participate and appropriate boundaries. They remain present and responsible within the FriendWorX model.

As young people become comfortable interacting with one another, the Guide can step back without stepping away. One positive sign may be that peer interaction needs less active facilitation while safeguards remain in place.

Non-clinical by design

FriendWorX has a different role

FriendWorX is not psychology, counselling, therapy or a clinical social-skills program. It may complement professional or therapeutic supports, but does not replace them.

FriendWorX creates opportunities for peer participation and relationship development through shared experiences. Participants and parents can identify goals, but Guides do not deliver treatment plans or turn every interaction into instruction.

Goals help Guides understand what matters while sessions remain shared social experiences. Friendship is not scored.

What FriendWorX believes

Connection grows from opportunity, choice and time

  • Friendship cannot be forced.
  • Shared experiences make connection easier.
  • Young people should have a say in who they connect with.
  • Belonging and familiarity take time.
  • Online spaces can support meaningful relationships when designed responsibly.
  • Adults should support connection rather than dominate it.
  • Progress can be recognised without making friendship competitive.
  • Young people deserve experiences that respect their age.

Could it be worth exploring?

Another pathway to peer connection

FriendWorX may be worth exploring if a young person would like more opportunities to meet peers through shared online activities.

  • They take time to become comfortable with new people
  • Large or unstructured social environments feel difficult
  • A consistent small group could feel more approachable
  • They want to meet people with shared interests
  • Local peer opportunities are limited

These are possibilities, not diagnostic criteria or requirements.

An addition, not a replacement

FriendWorX provides another pathway

FriendWorX is not intended to replace family relationships, school, community activities, existing friendships or professional supports where they are needed. It adds another structured opportunity for peer connection.

The organisation story

FriendWorX began with a simple question

How can we give young people more genuine opportunities to find people they connect with?

The FriendWorX model brings together the principles that followed: smaller groups, shared activities, Discovery, consistent peers, appropriate adult guidance, safety by design and goals without clinicalising friendship.
