Young people aged 8–17

Connection should feel right for their age.

FriendWorX is an Australian, non-clinical friendship and social connection service that brings young people aged 8–17 together in small, facilitated online groups with similarly aged peers. An experience that suits an eight-year-old should not feel the same as one designed for a sixteen-year-old.

We describe three broad experiences: younger children, pre-teens and teens. These are public-facing guides, not rigid matching categories. Age is one part of finding the right group.

Age-respectful by design

The same purpose, expressed differently

Every FriendWorX group is about friendship and peer connection. The language, activities, level of Guide involvement and way participants engage should respect where each young person is developmentally.

As participants mature, the experience can become less adult-led where appropriate. Safeguarding remains in place at every age.

Younger children

Familiar faces, shared activities and gentle support to join in.

For younger participants, FriendWorX can provide an enjoyable small-group rhythm: meeting the same people, having something engaging to do together and becoming more comfortable taking part over time.

The Guide can help when someone needs support joining in, taking turns, cooperating or feeling included—without putting pressure on them to perform socially.

  • Small, familiar groups
  • Enjoyable shared activities
  • Support to join in
  • Cooperation and inclusion

Approximately 11–13

Pre-teens

Shared interests, a consistent group and growing confidence.

Pre-teens can meet people around their age, learn who they naturally get along with and become more comfortable contributing to a consistent group. Shared activities take pressure off having to create conversation from nothing.

As the group develops, participants can navigate different ideas, cooperate and build confidence within the group, with Guide support available for group dynamics when needed.

  • People with shared interests
  • A regular social experience
  • Comfort joining conversations
  • Growing group confidence

Approximately 14–17

Teens

A social space to meet people your age without having to manufacture conversation.

For teens, FriendWorX creates an age-respectful environment where shared interests and activities make it easier to spend time with people they may genuinely enjoy getting to know.

The young people interact with each other; the Guide is there when support is needed. As the group becomes comfortable and more independent, the Guide should become less central rather than provide adult-led entertainment.

  • People your age
  • Genuine peer connection
  • Less pressure to make conversation
  • Increasing independence

Same service, different experience

The core model stays consistent

Age changes how the experience feels—not the commitment to supported, purposeful connection.

  • Small groups
  • Similarly aged peers
  • Known participants
  • FriendWorX-managed identities
  • Adult Guide support
  • Shared activities
  • Discovery before ongoing matching
  • Parent/carer visibility
  • Goals and progress where appropriate

The older the group becomes, the less the experience should feel adult-led—while support and safeguards remain available.

Age is only part of the match

A date of birth can’t tell us who someone will connect with

FriendWorX generally brings similarly aged peers together, but age alone does not determine whether a group is a good fit. Matching may also consider interests, communication style, availability, confidence, preferred activities, group dynamics and who participants actually appear to enjoy spending time with.

Discovery allows natural, comfortable peer connections to emerge before an ongoing group is formed. FriendWorX does not simply fill an age-based vacancy.

Shared doesn’t mean identical

Different interests are okay

Shared interests can help interaction, but compatibility is broader than liking exactly the same things. A group does not need to be built around one specific game, and activities can change over time.

The activity creates an environment for:

  • cooperation
  • communication
  • exploration
  • creativity
  • problem-solving
  • shared experiences

Conversation is easier when conversation isn’t the activity. The game gives young people something to do together; peer connection—not gaming performance—is the purpose.

Support that responds to the group

Guide involvement changes with age, confidence and group needs

There is no rigid formula. Guides support connection rather than dominate it, stepping forward when help is useful and stepping back as participants interact comfortably and independently.

  1. Younger participants

May benefit from more help finding a way into the activity or conversation.

  2. Pre-teens

May need support navigating group dynamics or different ideas.

  3. Teens

May prefer the Guide to be less visible unless support is needed.

Young-person voice

Their experience matters too

A parent or carer’s perspective is important, but it is not the only one. FriendWorX also considers the young person’s interests, preferences, comfort, goals and experience of the group.

Listening to both helps create an experience that feels relevant and respectful rather than something decided entirely around them.
